A year of impact: Advancing Airborne Wind Energy with DEM-AWE project

As 2024 comes to an end, the DEM-AWE project celebrates a year of progress that has extensively work to positioned Airborne Wind Energy as a key player in the renewable energy landscape. Since its kick-off in February 2024 at the Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) seminar in Lille, France, the project has demonstrated technological innovation, strengthened community ties, and mapped pathways for future deployment.

A major milestone this year has been the continuous Kitepower's operations in Bangor Erris, Mayo County, Ireland, where over 100 successful flights where conducted, showcasing Kite-Powered Battery Energy Storage System (K-BESS) ability to deliver clean energy to off-grid areas and reducing diesel reliance. Beyond the technology, our Dutch partner Ktepower engaged with the local community through open days, school visits, and ongoing studies on bird impacts and social acceptance, fostering trust and curiosity around the pilot testing.

To support broader adoption, DEM-AWE advanced its GIS site identification model, expanding analysis to Ireland, and more to come for the Netherlands, France and Spain. This tool unveils optimal deployment sites while accounting for safety, regulatory, and environmental factors, paving the way for further innovation as regulations evolve.

In addition, throughout the year, DEM-AWE partners actively promoted AWE’s potential at key events. The webinar “The Future of Airborne Wind Energy” brought together over 30 stakeholders, including the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), which recognized AWE in its Offshore Renewable Energy Technology Roadmap. At WindEnergy Hamburg 2024, the technology attracted over 300 visitors, with Kitepower’s CEO, Johannes Peschel, sharing updates on the system’s success in Ireland. Events like the European Sustainable Energy Week and the Interreg NWE Partnership Event in Dublin also highlighted AWE’s role in achieving Net Zero targets.

As we look to 2025, DEM-AWE remains committed to advancing AWE technology, expanding deployment opportunities, and increasing collaboration with communities and stakeholders. This year’s success is a testament to the power of innovation, engagement, and partnership in the North-West Europe region.

A heartfelt thank you to all who supported the project in 2024, particularly the Bangor Erris community, for their curiosity, trust, and collaboration. Also to the three local operators that have been trained by Kitepower to fly the kite. Together, we are unlocking the potential of Airborne Wind Energy to drive a cleaner, and more sustainable future.
