RWE’s role in advancing Airborne Wind Energy at Bangor Erris

In 2023, Bangor Erris, located in County Mayo, Ireland, emerged as a pivotal testing ground for Airborne Wind Energy systems, thanks to the collaborative efforts of RWE Renewables and Kitepower.

This initiative, part of the MegaAWE project (DEM-AWE predecessor), was led by Mayo County Council and supported by Interreg North-West Europe, focusing on integrating innovative AWE solutions into local energy systems.

Peter Lefroy Head of Offshore Development, RWE Ireland & UK West, remarked, “RWE’s involvement in Bangor Erris underscores our commitment to exploring cutting-edge renewable energy technologies. By supporting AWE, we aim to enhance our innovative renewable portfolio, promoting sustainable advancements.”

The test hub in Bangor Erris is crucial for collecting data that will drive the development and standardization of AWE technologies. First, testing Kitepower’s Falcon system, capable of generating up to 100-kW, marked a significant milestone. On the other hand, the Hawk, a 30-kW kite-powered battery energy storage system (K-BESS) capable of charging a 400kWh battery in 10 hours followed it up. The test hub can also be visited contacting Kitepower, and this signifies accelerated development opportunities, benefiting the rest of other AWE companies that may fly there at one stage and promote the entire renewable energy sector as well.

RWE has granted Kitepower an extension to continue using the Bangor Erris site, facilitating further testing and the scaling of their technologies. This extended partnership reflects RWE’s dedication to supporting the growth of AWE, ensuring that these advancements contribute to a greener and more sustainable energy future.

This collaboration highlights the importance of strategic investment and international cooperation in renewable energy. The Bangor Erris test hub exemplifies how innovative energy solutions can be integrated into local communities, reducing environmental impacts and simplifying energy supply chains.
